Country poet Merle Haggard, who is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, didn't shy away from his past discretions when he put pen to paper. Many of his self-written hits drew directly from his time in San Quentin including "Mama Tried" and "Sing Me Back Home."
