Album Review: Trailer Choir, Tailgate

Looking for a country band that can provide the perfect summer party soundtrack? Well, new trio Trailer Choir just may be your answer as their Toby Keith co-produced debut disc Tailgate is chocked full of anthems that are sure to get the party started. Butter, who stays front and center on the vast majority of Tailgate, along with fellow Trailer Choir members Crystal and Big Vinny offer up 10 hooky, fun-lovin’ tunes for fans of contemporary country.

The trio kicks things off with their current single “Shakin’ That Tailgate” which conjures up thoughts of hit from a few years back about badonkadonks as well as shows off Crystal’s impressive pipes as she wails the title throughout the tune. The group’s previous single the summer flavored, rollickin’ “Rollin’ Through the Sunshine” follows with its sing-along chorus that addresses the wanderlust of leaving responsibility behind for a carefree good time which is also revisited with “Can’t Drink All Day.” The ever popular topic of drinking continues with “In My Next 5 Beers” which showcases Big Vinny’s vocal talent. And with drinking, there’s usually dancing which is tackled in the high-octane “Girls Love To Go Dancin’.” The party rolls on with two of Trailer Choir’s previous singles “Rockin’ the Beer Gut” and “Off the Hillbilly Hook.”

Can’t get away for a little rest and relaxation? Trailer Choir comes to the rescue with the Lee Brice co-written track “Homemade Mexico,” a cute tune about creating your own stay-cation in your own backyard.  Keeping with the simplicity-is-bliss theme is the sweet “Wal-Mart Flowers” which cites that romance doesn’t have to be a fancy, elaborate production.

Things turn a little more serious with “Last Man Standing” as the tune champions overcoming the odds when things are stacked against you. The song stands out among the rest as it doesn’t quite fit with the party-hard attitude displayed on the other nine tracks on Tailgate, but it shows that the group has more up its sleeve than just up-tempo playfulness.
