LISTEN: Teen Spirit and Final Countdown Mashup

Late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain could never have guessed that our culture's current fixation with remixes and mashups would have someday intertwined his classic "Teen Spirit" with Swedish metal band Europe's "The Final Countdown." Yet here we are in 2010, and there the pairing is. The folks at Wax Audio took the time to carefully stitch together the grunge anthem with one of the songs it was very likely taking aim against. And yet, the results are not all that bad.

Taking Kurt's pained vocals and throwing them against a backdrop of cheesy synthesizer might have been worse, if "The Final Countdown" had not become a hokey meme somewhere along the way. As the entrance music for a bevy of professional wrestlers, as well as Will Arnett's character G.O.B. in Arrested Development, the tune has managed to attain a certain corny charm.
