Billy Corgan Calls Pavement the "Death of the Alternative Dream"
Billy Corgan took to his Twitter account this week to post that Smashing Pumpkins "are playing with Pavement in Brazil." But instead of the usual promotion of the show, Corgan took a hard shot at Pavement, saying the concert would be akin to "one of those New Orleans type funerals."
The reason: Corgan writes that Pavement "represent the death of the alternative dream," while the Pumpkins "follow with the affirmation of life part." He ended his online bashing of Stephen Malkmus' band when he posted that Smashing Pumpkins would be "the band up there playing NEW songs because we have the love." Harsh.
This rivalry between Smashing Pumpkins and Pavement is nothing new. They've been at it since 1994, when Pavement released the song "Range Life" from their album Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. The lyrics in the song include the lines "Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins/Nature kids, they don't have no function/I don't understand what they mean." Guess we shouldn't expect Corgan and Malkmus to do a duet onstage together in Brazil.
